TUCSON (KVOA) – Once the Haitian refugees arrive in Tucson, border police will clear them. From there, the migrants will temporarily go to Casa Alitas while they are housed with other families already living in the States.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began planning flights from Del Rio to Tucson on Tuesday.

News 4 Tucson has confirmed that migrants are arriving at Casa Alitas and have been doing so for the past few days.

Given the COVID-19 precautions, Tucson City Councilor Steve Kozachik says they can only detain about 60-80 people in a place like Casa Alitas right now. Before that, they could hold 200-300.

According to Kozachik, the city is still seeing numerous migrants from South America in addition to the arriving Afghanistan refugees.

At the moment there are a few hotels that accommodate all migrants.

“They are looking for asylum here, they are refugees from very, very traumatic situations and know that we want to treat them with the dignity they deserve, just as we did with those from Central America and soon the Afghans.” “, Says siad Kozachik.

He adds that although the number of people entering the country is large, it is still manageable to cope with all migrants for the time being.

He says the city needs federal aid as it is not just a city or state issue.
