A landslide brought down many saguaros on the southeast side of Golden Gate Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park on Sunday.
The photo shows the result of a landslide that occurred on July 25, 2021 on the southeast side of Golden Gate Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park.
A landslide brought it down.
So it happened last Sunday on scenic Golden Gate Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park with a swath of saguaros and earth.
“A number of saguaro cacti were knocked over on the way of the slide,” said a memo from Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry. “But many more were destroyed by the rocks migrating downhill from the slide area and destroying everything in their path.”
The landslide occurred in an area of the park with no trails and away from public areas, said Karen Simms, division director of Pima County Natural Resources. But she said people should avoid the area anyway.
“Most of all, we want to encourage people not to climb up there and try to look at the area where the fall happened,” she said. The slide was on the southeast side of the mountain.
The cause is not known, said Simms. She was reluctant to attribute it solely to the heavy rainfall in the area over the weekend.
“Surely all day rain that we had would normally not be the kind of thing that would cause this,” she said.
Instead, Simms suggested that the rains near the summit might show some instability.
Her main concern right now is the scar that is now visible on the face of the mountain.
