Lisa Przystup Tucson Road Trip 2021

If you’re flying in instead of driving all over the country like we did, you’ll probably want to rent a car. I don’t drive so I can’t talk about the merits of having one type of car over another, but Tucson is not like Joshua Tree, where you drive a lot of unfinished roads. Everything is fairly accessible and paved so you don’t have to rent an ATV or anything like that. We drove cross-country with our Subaru, which has four-wheel drive and had zero problems.

At Airbnb, it all depends on what type of experience you want. When we go to Tucson, we love to stay in the Barrio Viejo, a small neighborhood of beautiful old adobe bricks that’s a 20 minute walk from downtown and Fourth Avenue, the main street that’s full of restaurants and shops for you to visit . If you’re only going to drive a few days, you don’t necessarily need a car. A car is definitely useful for a longer stay.

We like to rent a house when we travel. It’s nice to have a back yard and space of our own, and now that we have a puppy we’ve discovered the merits of having a back yard. We rented a house from a friend this time, but there are a handful of adobe houses in the barrio on Airbnb. It’s a very special neighborhood. It’s small, serene, and incredibly charming, and the lights and shadows at the golden hour are breathtaking.

As soon as we are inside, we make it a point to stock up on essentials for the next few nights. After a long day of travel, it’s really nice to open a nice bottle of wine or pour a splash of mezcal to relax. We usually visit Time Market (444 E University Blvd.). You have it all: great fresh bread, an inexpensive menu and delicious pizza – because the last thing you want to do after a long day driving is cooking. They also carry good things like wine, fresh local produce, candles, and coffee (which is a first morning need for me – I basically need coffee to get coffee). We usually hold it back quite a bit the first night, when in truth we hold it back a bit every night.
