You want to be in the room where it happens.
“Hamilton” live on stage far surpasses the film version of the Broadway production that aired on Disney +.
And even without the original line-up.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s blockbuster musical roadshow takes place at Centennial Hall through December 5th.
The play about Alexander Hamilton and his co-founders explodes on stage. There is an electricity that shot through the audience on Thursday when the first notes came, and the level never dropped.
The film version has so many close-ups that you miss the wider picture. And the overall picture includes Andy Blankenbühler’s choreography, which is innovative and fascinating. It is worth seeing the full effect of dancing.
But there are so many other reasons to go.
Starting out as a determined but penniless teenager new to America and eager to make a name for himself, Alexander Hamilton quickly becomes powerful in this new nation. Julius Thomas III. used his powerful voice and increasingly demanding presence to get our attention. He’s captivating in the role.
So did Donald Webber Jr., as Aaron Burr. Webber made us easily forget Leslie Odom Jr., who played the role so brilliantly on Broadway. Webber moved with grace, sang with strength, and embodied this ambitious and politically ambiguous character, a jealous friend and affectionate father. He’s the tragic character in Hamilton, and Webber played him beautifully.
