Bridgett Scofield (left) and Jenny Martin describe Woolly Fern as “an upscale shopping experience.”

A 1988 Buick LeSabre hearse stands in front of a nondescript building on East Speedway and North Columbus Boulevard.

Usually reserved for transferring coffins to their final resting places, the vehicle seems more appropriate in front of a local funeral home, but it serves a purpose.

The hearse is the daily driver for Bridgett Scofield and is initially used as a roadside advertisement for the brand new curiosity shop Woolly Fern, which Scofield recently opened with business partner Jenny Martin.

The shop window front still needs signage, but inside, customers are treated to a visual feast of the unusual, bizarre and macabre.

Shimmering and brightly painted animal skulls by the local bone sculptor Dan Kihl hang on the dark green walls. Vintage furniture and Gothic home decorations, including taxidermy, can be found all over the room, and art ranges from tentacle pillows to science prints.

Woolly Fern also sells vintage sterling and estate jewelry, hand-picked Gothic-style clothing, antique books, medical pieces, geodes, and crystals.

When it’s done, Scofield and Martin envision their store as a plant oasis with a focus on science, natural history, and anything dark and vintage.
