Tucson airport almost back to pre-pandemic passenger counts

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – Last week the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened over three million passengers at airports across the country.

As more people travel, TSA officers at Tucson International Airport are ready for full capacity.

“Fortunately, the TSA is trying to meet its human resource goals this month,” said Patricia Mancha, a TSA spokeswoman.

Several airports across the country have had to deal with COVID-19 cases that affected their staff, but TSA staff at Tucson International Airport TSA have not had a COVID-19 case in over a month, according to TSA.

“It’s not just one thing, but many things have been done to protect not only our officers but the traveling public as well,” said Mancha.

At the moment, the airport is approaching pre-pandemic passenger numbers. The airport said they were ready for more as they prepare for the next wave of travel.

“We are built for these numbers and, in fact, for more than what you see today,” said Bruce Goetz, Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer of the airport.

Everyone who flies must wear a mask, but mandatory vaccines are being discussed at the federal level. On The Skimm podcast, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said he would support mandatory vaccination certification for those who wish to fly.

Goetz said that they are waiting for instructions from Washington on such decisions.

“To be honest, this is a political decision that is being weighed at headquarters in Washington, DC,” said Goetz. “We are like everyone else. We are in a wait-and-see mode to see whether they implement it and how they implement it.”

In the meantime, anyone who wants to get vaccinated can get any of the three vaccines at the airport for free.
