Due to ongoing construction, Casino del Sol’s 4,000-square-foot sportsbook is “physically not ready” as sports betting becomes legal in Arizona on Thursday. The casino’s CEO expects it to open in the next month or so.

Sports betting is legal in Arizona starting Thursday.

But in Tucson, expect a wait to do it in person.

The planned 4,000 square meter sports betting facility at Casino del Sol at 5655 W. Valencia Road is still being renovated and is not ready for the big kick-off on Thursday. Desert Diamond Casinos plans to open a pair of sports bets in Tucson and Green Valley this fall and launch a betting app to match.

Casino del Sol’s sports betting provider was “physically not ready,” said CEO Kimberly Van Amburg, citing COVID-19-related production delays and bottlenecks. “It just takes time. We’re on track to be ready in the next few months or so. “

In fact, only two of the state’s personal sports bets are expected to be open for personal betting on Thursday – those operated by the Diamondbacks and Suns in downtown Phoenix.

The tribes of the state must agree to an appendix to the gaming pact before opening sports betting on tribal land, said Max Hartgraves, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Gaming.

Until then, Tucsonans can get their sports betting fix by downloading any number of online apps. MGM, Caesar’s, FanDuel, Bally’s, DraftKings, Wynn and SuperBook Sports, among others, have been promoting their apps among the Arizonans for weeks. Many offer specials to join in, from free credits to risk-free bets; Promise $ 1 credit for every point Arizona’s teams scored that weekend.
