For years, Meet Me Downtown 5K has been Tucson’s standout night race, an opportunity to brave the heat – and an excuse for many to have dinner and a beer afterwards.

But these are strange times, and so times are changing – literally – for the 15th annual TMC Meet Me Downtown 5K on Sunday.

Tucson’s most popular charity race starts just after sunrise on Sunday. The start and finish line is on Sixth Avenue between Armory Park and the Children’s Museum. Due to the ongoing pandemic, organizers encourage participants to wear face covering before and after the race if 6 feet cannot be maintained.

Runners and walkers are not required to wear masks during the competition, but are asked to “take care of those around you”. Spectators are asked to mask themselves.

The race, regardless of the start time, marks a return to semi-normality in Tucson’s thriving running community. Of course there are COVID-19 contingents: Anyone who does not feel comfortable at a live event can register, compete virtually and enter their times among the finishers. People who run in person are asked to bring their own water as there will only be one drinking station and spectators will not be allowed to distribute drinks.

By Friday evening, 906 racing drivers had registered for the events on Sunday morning.
