35+ restaurants & food artisans get certified by the Tucson City of Gastronomy

the Tucson City of Gastronomy has selected its certified restaurants 2021 and the first representatives of the new categories of certified food artisans and beverage artisans.

It is also a real honor to be there. The application is limited to a total of 25 locally run, independent restaurants and 15 local food and beverage artisans. Now every business is specially sponsored by Visit Tucson, the Pima County Visitor Center, Tucson City of Gastronomy, and its partners.

“We are inspired by the resilience of the restaurants and artisans who applied for the culinary industry during this challenging time,” said Tucson City of Gastronomy Directory. Jonathan Mabry, “And can’t wait to get the word out about how the 2021 selection will support our local food economy, take special care of its employees, give back to the community and keep our food heritage alive.”

What makes these restaurants and local businesses stand out?

In this group of new certifications, all companies source ingredients from local producers, partner with other food companies, and use traditional ingredients in many of their menus and artisanal products.

Another thing that all certified restaurants and artisans are doing in 2021 is giving back to the community in a number of different ways. This could be hiring people faced with obstacles, or donations and fundraising for the community food bank, soup kitchens, or women’s shelters.

“We want these certifications to bring more customers to these unique local businesses that support our internationally recognized food culture to help them survive the current national extinction event for independent restaurants and other non-chain food companies,” said Mabry.

President of Tucson City of Gasromony, Janos Wilder, sees the program as an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the city’s food culture.

“Each of these restaurants and artisans represent our city of gastronomy with their own unique identities and perspectives on what it means to live, work and cook here,” said Wilder. “Their employment practices are ambitious models of how modern, independent companies can work to improve their communities.”
