After the original Tucson Rodeo Parade and the rodeo itself were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s annual event coordinators are offering an alternative way to celebrate the tradition.
On Saturday, March 20th, fans are invited to visit the Tucson Rodeo Grounds, 4823 S. Sixth Ave., for a free Reverse Rodeo Parade from 10am to 1pm
More than 80 carriages from the Tucson Rodeo Parade Museum will be lined up along a winding route in the rodeo’s parking lot, along with 15 stations that feature historical exhibits and live entertainment, including Trick Roper, Mariachi Aztlán de Pueblo High School, and Gertie and the TO Boyz, a Tohono O’odham Nation band specializing in traditional Waila music.
The drivers move along the route and stay in their vehicles, socially distant from their fellow spectators.
“Many of the floats we’ll have outside have never rolled in the parade,” said Herb Wagner, a spokesman for the Tucson Rodeo Parade Committee. “They’re antique and don’t roll well. But we can bring it out and exhibit it in this format. “
Wagner said the committee hoped the rodeo and parade would still take place in December, but with more than 200 volunteers and more than 2,000 people attending the parade each year, not to mention the thousands of people who attend the Line the streets where the parade is taking place on the south side of Tucson, “it becomes a reality that we cannot hold an event with a spectator.”
