The 48th yearbook Tucson Meet you The Folklife Festival returns to downtown Tucson on October 8th, 9th and 10th, allowing audiences to reconnect with its diverse and diverse cultures. As always, innovation and customization are emblematic of changing traditions, and this year festival organizers redesigned the event to prioritize the safety of artists, vendors and the wider community.

Organized by the Southwest Folklife Alliance, this year’s TMY is taking place in Jácome Plaza and the surrounding blocks of Stone Avenue, Church Avenue and Pennington Street. Casino del Sol is back as the festival’s title sponsor this year after taking a hiatus in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic on closings. Organizers have consulted with Tucson City and Pima Counties Health and the Centers for Disease Control to plan an adaptive festival that will mitigate the risk associated with COVID-19. A 15 point set of COVID guidelines can be viewed on the TMY website (and is updated regularly).

The festival highlights in 2021 include:

  • Over 50 performance groups Sharing music and dance on just two stages set up with social distancing reminders. Performers include long-time TMY favorites such as Gertie N the TO Boyz, Seven Pipers Scottish Dancers & Tucson District Pipe Band, Odaiko Sonora Taiko Drumming, as well as Chinese dances and folk songs, Hawaiian hula dance, Argentine folk music and the ceremony Yaqui deer dancers.
  • 30 food vendors Represented over 20 cultural regions, including Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Egypt, Jamaica and local indigenous tribes. Ropeways and signage promote and monitor social distance in the case of queues. Take-away meals and several reserved parking spaces are only available for pick-up.
  • 50 folk artists share manual and visual arts. Artists will not have hands-on activities for visitors this year and some will share their work and processes for a short time in a demonstration tent.
  • The opening speech Ethnic and Traditional Dance Festival in Arizona, presented by TMC Healthcare, on Thursday October 7th, Tucson’s Fox Theater. Tickets are available for this event (16 and younger are free but need to reserve tickets) and follows Fox Theater COVID Policywho require proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result for entry.
  • A lowrider auto handicraft demonstration organized by Tucson’s Dukes Car Club, with 10 cars and ongoing demonstrations on how to trick your own drive.
  • Mariachi pop-up performance & filming for Ugly Little Monkeys Documentary Final. Catch the final scene of a documentary about Los Changuitos Feos, one of Tucson’s oldest and most famous youth mariachi groups that has been expanding opportunities for young people for over 50 years.
  • TMY Corrido Competition, returning by popular demand, celebrates the art of corridos, a musical genre and oral tradition from Mexico and the US-Mexican border areas, with ongoing accounts of contemporary and historical events in verse.
  • A special one Tent for loss & memory recognizes grief and offers relaxation and support with special songs and dances of grief and healing by several festival artists, a wall of loss, a community jukebox, death doulas and more.
