The Foothills Art District hosts art walks on the first Thursday from 4pm to 7pm each month. Jane Hamilton Fine Art is pictured in Plaza Colonial.

Visitors continue their art walk on the southwest corner of North Campbell Avenue and East Skyline Drive. The walks offer “good food, music and friendly conversation, all designed to create a welcoming atmosphere for visiting the fabulous art,” says Stuart Johnson, owner of Settlers West.

The Foothills Art Galleries recently teamed up with several other art-related companies in Plaza Colonial across the street to create the Foothills Art District. Other participating galleries include Jane Hamilton Fine Art, the Wilde Meyer Gallery, and the two main locations of Sunset Interiors & Design Studio.

At For Fine Art, which opened in October, patrons chat and enjoy wine. The gallery offers “a contemporary twist on Western art, including jewelry and designer accessories created by artists from all over the West,” said co-owner Tula Thompson.

The long-established, but newly named, Foothills Art Galleries, located at 6420 N. Campbell Ave., north of East Skyline Drive, are one of those rare places in Tucson that offers beauty and tranquility in the midst of an upside-down world.

With a turn off the beaten path, the art lover finds refuge from the cacophony of traffic, screeching brakes and honking horns and enters a secluded courtyard with four art galleries; a reminder of the architect’s ability to create something that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The surroundings are fascinating. The tranquility of the courtyard is enhanced by stately trees that share space with sculptures and a variety of desert plants, with views of the Catalinas in the distance. In the middle of it all is a self-sufficient goldfish pond.

Chris Sanders, co-owner of Sanders Galleries, one of the longer-term galleries on the property, said they never feed the fish.

“They eat reeds and other plants and produce more fish,” he said. “Your little ecosystem is amazing.”

Joining the Sanders Galleries is the long-standing neighboring gallery Settlers West owned by Stuart Johnson, For Fine Art, which opened October 1, and another recently added Sunset Interiors & Design studio.

For Fine Art offers “a contemporary twist on Western art, including jewelry and designer accessories created by artists from all over the West,” said co-owner Tula Thompson.
