With nearly 14,000 square feet additional, they’ll be flinging tamales left and right.

In order to efficiently meet the increasing demand for its handmade goods, Tucson Tamale Company has officially opened its second production facility. The new location is in a converted iconic building at 102 W. 29th St. that used to be the former Malone meat and poultry plant.

The company’s other facility, which opened back in 2015, is near Grant Road, and the two sites together plan to complete 10 million tamales in 2022.

“It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come since 2008, from that magical 1,000 square foot storefront on Broadway to over 28,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space today,” said Sherry Martin, Co-founder of Tucson Tamale.

Earlier this year, Tucson did Tamale and Diamond Ventures teamed up for the purchase and renovation of the building. The vacant food processing plant received a facelift – a reflection of the revitalization that is taking place in the urban core of the region.

“Our tamales are sold in 4,000 grocery stores in all 50 states, and we are spreading the love of tamales by sending our tamales as gifts to individuals, households and through recurring subscriptions,” said Sherry Martin. “They are a great gift in every season – but especially at the beginning of the Christmas season.”

It’s a proud moment indeed, and the co-founders Sherry and Todd Martin are grateful for everyone who helped them create the Tamale Empire that it is today. You are also grateful to those who helped devour it.

“Our company’s success is determined by our great people, suppliers, wholesale customers and loyal tamale lovers everywhere,” said Todd Martin, co-founder. “The possibility of working with City of South Tucson, and a local team led by Diamond Ventures, an experienced and highly regarded developer, was a wonderful experience for all of us. “

A celebration of partnerships

Tucson Tamale and Diamond Ventures will celebrate Wednesday December 1st with a grand opening ceremony recognizing the community partnerships that have made the expansion a reality.

“We are excited and excited to be part of Tucson Tamale’s expansion in South Tucson,” said Bill Kelly, Chief Financial Officer at Diamond Ventures. “Working with the city was great. This type of project is what we do and Diamond Ventures looks forward to more opportunities to work on expanding local businesses as our regional economy recovers. “

In addition, Tucson Tamale is aiming to hire around 50 people to help out in both manufacturing facilities.

The holidays and tamales go hand in hand

With the holidays in full swing, tamales are becoming an everyday household item not just in the Southwest but across the country.

If you think about it, it’s a gift that Tucson Tamale ships all combo boxes for a flat rate of $ 9.95 in the continental US through Sunday, December 12th (free shipping to anyone in Arizona).

“We’re so proud that our tamales have become national food ambassadors for Tucson and our shared pride as the UNESCO City of Gastronomy,” said Sherry Martin.
