The Southern Arizona Community Food Bank has expanded its cold and freezer warehouse with a major renovation of the building.

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona completed a year-long renovation project at their facility.

The project, which cost around US $ 4 million and was funded by private donations, included expansion of cold and freezer warehouses, improved parking and traffic flow, and special spaces for volunteering and training.

This was the first major renovation of the 3003 S. Country Club Road building, which has housed the panel for more than 25 years. The building used to be a furniture warehouse.

“We are so grateful to the community and donors large and small for making this step possible,” said CEO Michael McDonald. “We have made so many improvements, from providing a temperature-controlled environment for the millions of pounds of products that come into our building, to making our lobby and volunteer area more welcoming and hospitable.”

The board announced the project last year just before the pandemic began. The plans have been put on hold with the emergency food demand sparked by the pandemic.

When the Tafel moved its drive-thru food distribution to the Kino Sports Complex last May, the work teams were able to start renovating the building and outside.

The drive-through distributions were moved back to the facility in January, a change made possible because of the renovated parking lot and improved traffic flow, officials said.
