New restaurants and cafes in Tucson

Here are some restaurants and cafes that have faced the challenge of opening their doors during the pandemic.

Locale neighborhood Italian:

The Italian restaurant had its grand opening at the end of December last year. The restaurant is located on Broadway and Alvernon and has a huge terrace in front of the house where you can enjoy everything from cappuccino to pasta to tiramisu.

Café Maggie:

The new cafe opened on Fourth Avenue in September 2020. It was previously Epic Cafe and has now reopened as Cafe Maggie in late September last year. In addition to coffee, the café also offers breakfast and lunch dishes. According to the website, it has been renamed after the longest current tenant, a Dieffenbachia plant called Maggie.

Transit tea:

While not a restaurant or necessarily a coffee shop, Transit Tea, Maya Tea’s sister company, opened along Speedway Boulevard in February 2021. Before that, the company was operated via a tea truck. The place offers every kind of iced tea along with tea soda or tea cones.

La Chingada Mexican cuisine:

The Mexican restaurant opened in December 2020. Located in downtown Tucson, it offers traditional Mexican food such as several types of street tacos including camaron capeado, birria de res, avocado chickpea, and chicken tinga.

Flora’s market run (restaurant and café opening):

Flora’s Market Run is the latest addition from Ares Collective, the company that owns Prep and Pastry. Flora’s is on Sixth Street and is a restaurant, cafe and market. The market side opened in April 2021, the café and restaurant are coming later this year.

Barrio CharrÖ:

Barrio Charro opened in January of this year as a quick, casual combination of Barrio Bread and El Charro Café. Each owned by Don Guerra and Carlotta Flores. The restaurant specializes in Mexican-style sandwiches called tortamanos.

Tuk Tuk Thai:

This new Thai restaurant opened last September and is located at 2990 N. Campbell Ave. According to This is Tucson, the restaurant is owned by Bud Sayso, who is from Laos and Thailand. His wife Noy cooks for the restaurant.

Lemongrass:

Opened in Tucson last October. The restaurant was founded by Tank Ojha, a geologist. His studies in geology took him to the Himalayas. After getting sick from eating local food, Ojha used his knowledge of geology and chemistry to develop healthy curries. These curries are on display at Lemongrass on Fourth Avenue.

Grandpa’s Grill:

The Greek restaurant opened on Fourth Avenue last November. Grandpa’s Grill is owned by Qais Papoutsis, who cooks the meal together with his brother Nawid Esar.

Kiwami ramen:

The new Japanese ramen restaurant opened in November 2020 and is located on Speedway Boulevard. Chef Tani has run successful ramen restaurants in Japan, New York and Houston, and Tucson can be added to the list.
