First retail sportsbook opens in Tucson

TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – Get out your wallets and place your bets. The first retail sports betting company in the Tucson area will officially be unveiled to the public on Thursday. Casino Del Sol opened its Sol Sports with a ribbon cut and a blessing on Wednesday.

“Today is a beautiful, beautiful day,” said Peter Yucupicio, chairman of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. “We can finally, as the saying goes, unpack this new sports betting area for this Christmas season.”

Their message: People no longer have to travel far to experience the great casino, sports and poker experience.

“(You) don’t have to go to Vegas, or Atlantic City, and most definitely not on a mobile app,” said John Collins, Sportsbook Director, Casino Del Sol.

While this is the first in Tucson, they are joining a growing list of sports betting retail locations across the state, with five more so far in the Phoenix area. Earnings to date won’t be revealed until the 29th, but initial data on fantasy sports betting looks promising. In the last four days of August alone, fantasy sports betting brought in more than $ 175,000 in entry fees in the states alone.

“It keeps the revenue here in Tucson, southern Arizona and Arizona itself, and that’s the beauty of having these sports betting facilities in southern Arizona and the state,” said Chairman Yucupicio.

Their hope is that the more local dollars, the more local jobs can be created and the industry boosted economically.

“We have around 20 employees, if you add the extra food, drink and other amenities that adds up to a likely 30 full-time employees,” said Kim Van Amburg, CEO of Casino Del Sol.

COVID-19 construction issues delayed openings a bit, but the casino said it would wait for everything to be ready to reveal the new space with chairs, spreads on the games and multiple TVs.
