Rocha received a surprise check Monday morning from Fry’s President Monica Garnes as part of the Kroger Community Immunity Giveaway, a company-wide initiative aimed at encouraging employees and their families to get vaccinated.

Rocha, a 38-year veteran of Fry’s stores in the Tucson area, said he had run the store at 555 E. Grant Road for the past six months. He said he was vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine not to receive a possible award, but to protect the employees and customers of his stores.

“It started with getting a vaccination and just doing everything and making sure I was working in a safe environment and making sure my customers were safe when they shop.”

Despite acknowledging the life-changing amount of money he had won, Rocha insisted he would continue to work at Fry’s.

“I’m 60 years old and hopefully I have a few more years left in me. I want to keep working and staying productive, ”he said.
