TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – Old Tucson closed its doors indefinitely almost a year ago due to the pandemic. A committee is currently reviewing proposals for a new owner group, according to Pima County’s Board of Directors.
Over the years, Old Tucson has captured the hearts of many.
“When you’ve got classics like Tombstone, Three Amigos, and basically every John Wayne movie. Everyone has their own childhood connection to these films, ”said Morgan Smith, a former Old Tucson entertainer.
The theme park has a cross-generational connection. Preston Gamblin and his son Caden Gamblin worked as stuntmen in Old Tucson.
“Go to the shootings, the can-can girls, or eat the food. Just share the experience. Going back in time was great. There was always something for everyone, ”said Preston Gamblin.
PJ Lawton worked in the park for 20 years and knew Bob Shelton, the founder of Old Tucson.
“I started to come across a lot of photos and information from the film industry. In addition, Bob gave me lots of photos and his mental knowledge of Old Tucson, ”Lawton said.
He has put his knowledge into a book that records the history of the film studio until the last nightfall in 2019.
“It’s really depressing to see it closed,” he said. “I’m sure the district is working on it”
The board of directors says the committee has until September 1 to complete its review. A final recommendation is expected to go to the board in late September or early October.
