In response, Supervisor Rex Scott read from a memo from Dr. Theresa Cullen, the public health director for the Department of Health, who said the program would limit exposure to COVID-19 by keeping infected people away from environments where transmission is more likely.

Scott also reiterated that the program is being funded not from the Pima County’s general fund, but US dollars for federal COVID relief.

“If we didn’t use these federal funds to house asylum seekers who may be infected with COVID-19 in these special shelters, they would be in community settings where they would be more likely to spread the virus,” Scott said in an interview.

Before the lawsuit was approved, Christy closed the discussion by stating that the funds still came from taxpayers’ money.

The $ 2,008,000 contract is awarded to Jot Properties LLC. awarded, a company that owns a Red Roof Inn near Tucson International Airport that houses qualified asylum seekers.

The contract states that the entire hotel, 117 rooms, will be made available to immigrants and will not rent any rooms to the public during the contract period. The hotel provides a cleaning service and thorough cleaning of the rooms during the term of the contract.

District Administrator Chuck Huckelberry said that from March 2021 to September 3, 8,420 asylum seekers were admitted to Casa Alitas. Of these, 292 immigrants tested positive for COVID-19, or about 3% of the total.
