TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – More than 50 people became ill at a Tucson hotel Monday, November 22, and a county health officer said it was being investigated for food poisoning.
The director of the Pima County Department of Health, Dr. Theresa Cullen said 56 people got sick at the Red Roof Inn at 1300 N. Stone Ave. Six of these people were transported to the hospital while the rest were treated on site. Cullen said most vomited but all had recovered by Tuesday.
According to the hotel, a group of people fell sick after eating a catering lunch. During a press conference on Tuesday, Cullen thanked the Tucson Fire Department for responding to the incident. She said TFD provided IVs and medication while the county also brought additional resources to the scene.
Cullen said the county, state and hotel management are investigating the incident. Red Roof released the following statement regarding the incident.
“Yesterday a group of the International Rescue Committee had lunch in the hotel as part of their work to support Afghan refugees in looking for accommodation and several people fell ill. The Pima County Health Department responded and hotel management closed the lobby out of caution, but the hotel and other guests were not evacuated or affected. Today we were told that everyone concerned is fine and fine. Glad to know everyone is fine and thank the Pima County Health Department and first responders for their timely response and assistance. We will continue to cooperate fully on any investigation the Pima County Health Department deems necessary.
