TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – A heavy monsoon storm passed through southern Arizona early Tuesday. August 10.
Most of the action took place in the Marana, Oro Valley and Summerhaven areas, where at least an inch of rain fell.
The storm led to multiple rescues (drivers and hikers), road closures and delays for parents and students. A church in Tucson was even struck by lightning, but there was no fire hazard.
The Tucson Fire Department, Northwest Fire District, and Golder Ranch Fire District rescued two people from the Flowing Wells Wash near Prince and Romero.
TFD said the couple, who were uninjured, floated down the laundry about half a mile from Evergreen Cemetery.

Crews from Northwest Fire and Golder Ranch also responded to two rapid water rescue calls at Canyon del Oro Wash near La Chollas and Overton.
According to Golder Ranch, two trucks got stuck. There were three people in one of the vehicles who needed help getting out. The other truck had a person in it and they could get out on their own.
According to the Pima County’s Department Search & Rescue, several hikers were stranded in Sabino Canyon early Tuesday.
PCSD Search & Rescue said it could take several hours to get the hikers out.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Lewis Springs area through 1:45 p.m.

As of 12:30 p.m., several roads in Pima County were closed due to the weather. These roads are:
- Overton Road from La Cholla Boulevard to Verch Way
- Camino de la Tierra from Valencia Road to Bilby Road
- Snyder Road east of Scenic Mountain Drive at Ventana Wash
- Mission Road north of Duval Mine Road
- Mission Road north and south of Mile Post 1
- Wentworth Road north of Speedway Boulevard
- Wentworth Road south of Cape Horn Drive
The Tucson Fire Department said crews at University City Church on Sixth Avenue responded after being struck by lightning before 10 a.m. Tuesday.
TFD, which was blocking Sixth Avenue north so crews could inspect the building, said there was no risk of fire.

Students in Marana USD have been warned that the district’s schools and buses are two hours late due to storm-induced flooding affecting routes.

- SUNDAY: 50% chance of rain / storm. Partly cloudy with highs in the deep 90s.
- MONDAY: 30% chance of rain / storm. Partly cloudy with highs in the deep 90s.
