TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – Karen Uhlich currently represents Ward 3 on Tucson City Council and took the seat when Paul Durham stepped down. She will be replaced in the upcoming elections and there are three candidates running for her position. Ward 3 is in the northwest region of Tucson.

Along its northern border are the Tucson Mall and Rillito Park. Its southern limit touches West Speedway Blvd.

Alan Harwell is a candidate running for Republican. Harwell never went to college. He has lived in Tucson for most of his life and sees himself as a standout candidate.

“There is no one to take my position and question the status quo of those already on the city council,” said Harwell.

Harwell says he wants to raise funds for the police and improve the parks and streets. He also wants to work for the homeless.

“We need an advocacy group, someone who’s been there and already knows what it’s like to be homeless,” said Harwell. “I was homeless, I took meth, I was in the hood.”

Lucy LiBosha describes herself as an independent progressive. LiBosha has been a math teacher in Tucson for 19 years, first at Sunnyside Unified and most recently at Tucson Unified. She is also a veteran; She previously served in the US Army as a graphic illustrator and paratrooper in the air.

“My three-step plan, my vision in this campaign, is to connect, invest and nurture Tucson,” said LiBosha.

LiBosha aims to provide Tucson residents with basic needs such as shelter and food and to address climate change through social justice work. She also wants to improve local public transport, which she has already done in the coordination committee for entire streets in the city.

“Invest in people, connect neighbors, neighborhood associations, businesses, and promote Tucson through policy and practice in an effective and equitable manner,” said LiBosha.

Kevin Dahl is the Democratic candidate. He has lived in Ward 3 for 38 years and has worked for three nonprofit conservation organizations during that time. Dahl currently works for the National Parks Conservation Association and helped expand Saguaro National Park last December.

“I’m very active in the neighborhood, doing cleanup work and planting trees,” said Dahl.

As a conservationist, Dahl’s main topic is climate change. He hopes to weather houses, improve vegetation and get rid of CO2 energy.

“Climate change is the intersectional issue,” said Dahl. “It will affect everyone, especially the weakest, it is a health problem, it is an economic problem, it will harm businesses, it will harm our tourism industry.”

One of these three candidates will represent District 3 of Tucson City Council, but any Tucson resident can vote for District 3 representative.
