TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – Tucson has Mexican restaurants all over town, but there are more than 50 restaurants in one area.
Tucson City Council named an area around South Tucson the best 23-mile-long Mexican food in the country.
Many of the restaurants all have a specific item that they are known for that makes customers want to come back after visiting.
Birrieria Guadalajara focuses on both breakfast and their birrieria. They are family owned and have been in operation for more than 39 years.
Another popular spot is BK Carne Asada and Hot Dogs. They have a Sonoran taste for many of the options on their menu, but most people come for the Sonoran hot dog.
“Everyone asks about them,” said Karyme Galinado, a staff member. “They are amazing.”
The largest concentration of Mexican restaurants is along 12th Avenue. It’s hard to go a block without seeing a new place.
Another family restaurant that has been open since 1965 is El Merendero. They focus on fresh food for their customers. The favorite food is an enchilada with its chipotle cream sauce.
But if you are looking for a tamale, Perfectos is the place just down the street. They have been open for 12 years and mostly made it through selling tamales during the pandemic.
With all of the Mexican restaurants, it might be hard to tell how many are open that long. Judith De La Rosa, who has worked at Perfectos for years, said it was because each of them had a specialty.
“I think each of us has something and something to thrive in,” said De La Rosa. “There is enough for all of us and there is something special that we all have, which is incredible.”
